I don’t think I’ve mentioned the carrots and daikon (Japanese long white radishes) that I planted in the front yard a few weeks ago. I forgot at the time that when the weather cools, and the rain falls, our front yard sprouts with weeds. So now we’ve got lots and lots of sprouts.
And I have no idea which ones are veggies, and which ones are weeds. I can see some of them are looking like they’ve come up in rows (veggies, obviously) but there’s lots of other sprouts that may be carrots, or daikon, but might not be.
In other news, the broccoli seedlings seem to have survived the week of fence-related neglect, the garlic and onions were planted, the tomatoes have been ripped out, and there was a distribution of bunny manure and mulch over the garden this weekend.
Finally, on a non-gardening note: If you ever find yourself making a quilt in indigo fabrics, and then think “I’ll get a quilting thread that doesn’t show up so no one will see how crooked and uneven my stitching is”, stop, and reflect that you will not be able to see the stitching in progress either. Slowest quilt ever.

I have a bad habit of planting rows of things next to each other and not labelling, thinking ‘it wil become clear what’s what as things get older’. But I’ve never seen Hong Kong Broccoli or Hon Tai Toi before, so I’m not always sure what I’m eating, or how to eat it.

I enjoy an adventure, so it doesn’t bother me too much if I’m not exactly sure what’s what.
Perhaps google images would be helpful? Do the place you got the seeds from have pictures in their catalogues? I wonder if there’s a “What Asian Vegetable is That?” book… it would be helpful for going to the market too.
My head’s all cloudy after spending yesterday at a wedding and I’m not getting any work done at all. I keep looking at the clock and getting panicky at the lack of progress and the brief amount of time available til I pick the lad up again…

So noted about the quilt. Helpful when I finally finish my first quilt.
The sound of chainsaws was less evident in Eltham this weekend. Still lots of cleaning up to do over the storm.

Our one bit of storm-related tree damage was removed. I don’t know who by. A branch came down from our street tree, the Bloke moved it from the street to the footpath (leaving plenty of room for pedestrians obviously) and then a week or so later it was gone.
Definitely a good idea to go for big contrasting sashiko stitching… wish I’d stuck to that idea.

I am looking for tips on growing daikon and stumbled upon your blog. Any daikon in your garden lately?

I don’t have any daikon now. My only real tip would be not to plant it anywhere near where you’ve also planted parsnip – it’s too confusing if you don’t know which one is which. Other than that, I managed to grow them in hopeless soil with severe water restrictions and elderly seeds, so if you like daikon they seem pretty hardy to me. Give them a go!
